The Department of Earth Sciences is seeking a highly motivated candidate for a Postdoctoral Associate for the CIRCLE (Community and Infrastructure Resilience to Climate-geological Long-term Effects) project. Funded by the New Frontiers in Research Fund–International program, this interdisciplinary project will integrate quantitative impact assessments of physically interconnected infrastructures subject to hydroclimatic-geological multi-hazards and qualitative socioeconomic evaluation to identify vulnerable people and to co-produce pre- disaster preparedness-recovery plans by engaging with coastal communities in Canada, Cuba, and Indonesia with diverse cultural and social settings.
Position and Qualifications
The successful candidate must hold a PhD in an Earth Sciences, Engineering, Geographical Sciences, Statistical Sciences, Disaster Risk Management, or a related field, and possesses skills and experiences that complement the objectives of the CIRCLE project (https://www.uwo.ca/multihazard_risk_resilience/CIRCLE_project/index.html). The key research areas of the CIRCLE project include: geophysics (earthquakes and tsunamis), coastal hazards (e.g., storm surges), climate change and sea level rise, quantitative risk analysis for the built environment (e.g., buildings and infrastructure), uncertainty analysis (e.g., machine learning and AI), early warning and evacuation, disaster risk management, and community disaster resilience. A strong track record of research in relevant areas or demonstrated familiarity with these disciplines is essential.
The successful candidate’s responsibility consists of two main parts: project management for the CIRCLE project (50%) and research contributions to the project related to the candidate’s expertise and interest (50%). The project management tasks include various communications and coordination among project participants (investigators and collaborators in Canada, United Kingdom, Cuba, and Indonesia) and organizations of project meetings and international/local workshops in Canada, Cuba, and Indonesia. The candidate will also contribute to research activities related to the Center for Multi-hazard Risk and Resilience (https://uwo.ca/multihazard_risk_resilience/).
The salary will be in the range of $55,000 − $65,000 per year and the position will be initially filled for one year. The preferred starting date is September 1, 2024, but is negotiable. The position can be extended upon satisfactory performance and funding availability (up to February 2027).
