Please refer to reference number PDFO-55214 when applying for this position.

Description

The Department of Computer Science and the School of Engineering (https://www.ok.ubc.ca) at The University of British Columbia, Canada invites applications for two postdoctoral positions at its Okanagan campus. One of the positions will be primarily at the Intelligent Data Science Lab, while the other will be jointly co-supervised by the Materials and Manufacturing Research Institute (MMRI) which is a multidisciplinary, interdepartmental research hub at the University of British Columbia (UBC) fostering collaboration between local, national and international R&D sectors. The latter position is funded by the UBC Eminence Cluster program. These Clusters of Research Excellence are interdisciplinary networks of researchers focused on solving key challenges facing society. The position is initially open for 1 year but extendable upon the availability of funding and performance.

We are looking for talented and highly motivated computer scientists (or people with a related background) interested in the design, development, and analysis of novel machine learning methods. Particularly, we are currently offering positions focusing on the following topics:

  • Robust and adversarial machine learning
  • Meta Learning/Few Short Learning
  • Machine learning for graphs / geometric deep learning
  • Transfer learning
  • ML models for temporal data (e.g. event sequences)
  • Anomaly and outlier detection
  • Uncertainty in ML

The developed methods will be applied and evaluated in various domains such as the natural sciences, the field of engineering, and the web.

Candidate skills & profile

  • University degree (M.Sc.) with very good grades in Computer Science or related fields. Ph.D. in the corresponding area and publications at top tier conference is required.
  • Strong background in machine learning / data mining and statistics.
  • Strong programming skills in at least one programming language (preferably Python and with experience in TensorFlow, PyTorch or similar).
  • Good English language skills (your responsibilities include to write publications, support in writing grant applications, and to give international presentations).

Application

Please send your application (in a single file in pdf format; no links to external files; in English) by email to Dr. Apurva Narayan (apurva.narayan@ubc.ca; subject: Applied Machine Learning PDF Application). The application should include a brief statement of interests/motivation letter, a curriculum vitae, copies of certificates, a copy of unofficial transcripts from past degrees, a summary/abstract of the PhD, and (if already available) a list of publications. A list of at least 2 references (names, contact information).

Applications will be considered as they are received and until the positions are filled.

Please check our website for up-to-date information: https://www.anarayan.com. The successful candidate at the Intelligent Data Science Lab will directly report to Dr. Apurva Narayan, and the successful candidate for the joint position with MMRI will be co-supervised and report to Dr. Apurva Narayan (lead of UBC Cluster of Research Excellence in Comfort-Enhancing Technologies) and Dr. Abbas Milani (Director of the Institute). Both positions will require similar skillsets.
