Postdoctoral Fellow in Software Engineering and Artificial Intelligence

The Data Science and Analysis for Software Engineering Lab (Dr. Fard’s Lab) at the University of British Columbia is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral fellow or Research Associate with a software engineering background and experienced in Machine Learning and Data Science. Dr. Fard’s laboratory works with multiple faculty members in the Computer Science and Engineering faculties on research projects related to Artificial Intelligence and Software Engineering. The lab has on going collaboration with researchers worldwide, and industry partners.

Our research focuses on software engineering, mainly related to code representation learning and automated tools to support software developers such as code comment generation and automated user feedback analysis. Other research projects include mining software repositories and empirical studies in software engineering.

The main duty of the hire will be help running the lab, doing research, mentoring and advising graduate students, helping with writing/revising research papers for submission in top ranked journal and conferences in software engineering, manage the current collaborative projects, and writing grants. The Scholar will work closely with the students, industry partners, and a team of graduate students to rapidly progress the research.


This project is seeking a team member at the postdoctoral level, research associate, or visiting professor with a Ph.D. in Software Engineering, Computer Science or related field with a strong background in deep learning and software engineering. Prior experience in natural language processing is an advantage. Previous experience with student supervision is required. As the main research in the lab requires applying deep learning and natural language processing techniques in software engineering, the ideal candidate would have:

  • Previous experience/knowledge in deep learning (theories and applications),
  • Previous experience in running a research lab, or advising students as a researcher or postdoctoral fellow, and
  • Writing academic papers in software engineering venues.

A successful candidate will work within a multidisciplinary team of computer science and engineering faculty, software engineers, computer scientists, data scientists, and AI experts. 
Accordingly, we seek applications from qualified candidates within 4 years of their PhD. degree for a postdoctoral fellowship with a start date in September (October by the latest). If the candidate is currently looking for a visiting position, strong research record is software engineering is required. The candidate will be required to work within a team environment and so excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse group of researchers and students is a must. Experience with technology development and working with industry partners is not required but would be advantageous. The candidate will work with Dr. Fatemeh Fard and her colleagues in the department.

Due to the restrictions brought by the pandemic, the candidate should be able to reside physically by the start date in Canada.
