Postdoctoral Fellow - Digital Sexual Health Initiative Team

We are looking for one (1) Postdoctoral Fellow to join our Digital Sexual Health Initiative (DiSHI) team. This full-time (1.0 FTE) position is available for two years, with the expectation that the fellow will seek external postdoctoral funding through sources such as the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) and Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research (MSFHR). The yearly salary will be $60,000.

The DiSHI team, consisting of multidisciplinary researchers, program leaders and policy makers, conducts applied research about the individual, system and population impact of online and other digital public health interventions ( The successful candidate will have a solid background in qualitative research, and a strong commitment to health equity. The fellow will be involved in implementation science research that aims to inform the ongoing adaptation and sustainability of GetCheckedOnline, a publicly-funded internet-based testing service for sexually transmitted and blood borne infections (STBBI) in British Columbia (BC). Operated by the BC Centre for Disease Control, GetCheckedOnline was launched in 2014 and has been successfully expanded to eight communities across BC. The service has been shown to effectively reduce barriers to STBBI testing.

The focus of this post-doctoral fellowship will be related to:

  • Sustainability of GetCheckedOnline, including decision-making processes and associated contextual factors, and integration with primary care
  • Adapting GetCheckedOnline for minority language populations in the Fraser Valley, BC (Punjabi, Mandarin and Cantonese speaking populations)

Duties of the Postdoctoral Fellow include, but are not limited to:

  • Designing study protocols, collecting and analyzing data using appropriate qualitative methods, summarizing and interpreting findings, and preparing a variety of knowledge translation outputs
  • Conducting interviews and focus groups with key stakeholders of GetCheckedOnline
  • Participating in the larger DiSHI research processes, including supporting other trainees and contributing to ongoing studies

The Postdoctoral Fellow will be appointed through the School of Population and Public Health, University of British Columbia. The Postdoctoral Fellow will work closely with Principal Investigators of the DiSHI team, and team members based at the BC Centre for Disease Control.


  • Completed a Ph.D. within the last 5 years (or shortly expect to complete) in a relevant discipline (e.g. public health, sociology, nursing, sociology, anthropology)
  • Experience conducting qualitative research, including with minority language populations
  • Commitment to health equity
  • Demonstrated understanding of and/or ability to work with communities that experience health inequity and face barriers to STBBI testing
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience with implementation science an asset
  • Demonstrated familiarity with minority language populations an asset
  • Proficiency in a second language (e.g., Punjabi, Mandarin and/or Cantonese) an asset
  • Demonstrated familiarity with sexual health topics preferred
  • Strong oral and writing communication skills, experience with publishing professional journal articles preferred
