Join Kristen Reeve (Educator, Investigations Office) and Alicia Oeser (Director, Sexual Violence and Response Office) for an introduction to UBC's Investigations Office and Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Office (SVPRO). Following an introduction to these offices and the resources available to UBC postdocs, Shelley and Alicia will be available to answer questions in a confidential breakout room setting.

The UBC Investigations Office was created in 2017 to ensure that investigations into sexual violence, discrimination and harassment are guided by the principles of procedural fairness, confidentiality, respect and a trauma-informed approach. The Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Office (SVPRO) is a confidential place for those who have experienced, or been impacted by, any form of sexual or gender-based violence, harassment, or harm, regardless of where or when it took place. We recognize that you are the expert of your own experience and you get to decide what is right for you. We aim to be a safer space for all by respecting each person’s unique and multiple identities and experiences. All genders and sexualities are welcome.

Educator Kristen Reeve will present the overview of Investigations Office including:

  • About UBC Investigations Office (IO)
  • How the IO supports the postdoctoral community

The Director, Sexual Violence Prevention & Response Office, Alicia Oeser, will present an overview of the SVPRO. SVPRO is a confidential place for those who have experienced, or been impacted by, any form of sexual or gender-based violence, harassment, or harm, regardless of where or when it took place. In both our support and prevention services, we work with the understanding that trauma comes in many forms and it is up to us to be respectful, responsive and proactive in this work. SVPRO has two primary roles on campus- prevention & response. Our approach to the work is rooted in anti-oppression. To truly address prevention and provide supportive service we MUST simultaneously work to end all forms of oppression or we will only make progress for some and reinforce the oppression of others.  This session will introduce SVPRO services, approach, and opportunities.

Guest Speakers

Kristen Reeve

Kristen is a Registered Nurse with over a decade of experience working in mental health and substance use. Past roles have included investigating complaints from individuals and community members to ensure safety and reduce risks associated with serious mental health conditions, as well as providing case management, counselling and overdose response. Kristen has significant experience with providing trauma-informed outreach to several diverse communities. She has worked with many survivors of sexual violence, as well as those who have faced allegations of sexual violence. She is experienced in conflict resolution as well as Alternative Resolution processes. Kristen joined our office in 2019 as an Educator and then stepped into the role of Investigator to ensure consistent service delivery while we undergo a search to fill the role permanently.

Alicia Oeser

Alicia is a settler from Southern California where the original and current caretakers of the land, water, and air are the Cahuilla, Tongva, Luiseño, and Serrano peoples. Alicia graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a BA in Political Science, followed by DePaul University’s MA program in Sociology.

Professionally, Alicia has 15 years of experience working with survivors of sexual, relationship, and gender-based violence, harassment and harm. Alicia has held roles in the field at non-profits, in local government, and higher education. Prior to arriving at UBC, Alicia most recently served as the Director for the University of California Los Angeles’ Campus Assault Resources and Education Program and before that as the Director for Harvard University’s Office of Sexual Assault Prevention & Response.

Alicia approaches the work as a puzzle. Creative thinking and non-stop innovations are a must for Alicia because solutions to complex social problems will never be one-size-fits-all. There is always more to learn and more to create. Alicia contextualizes the work with personal and political queerness, an atypical brain, and a commitment to the active learning required to be an accomplice in the tremendous work of accessibility, decolonization and Black Lives Matter.
