POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP AT THE STIGMA AND RESILIENCE AMONG VULNERABLE YOUTH CENTRE

The School of Nursing at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver campus invites applications for a two-year term position, 0.75 FTE at the rank of Post-Doctoral Fellow. The position may be extended for an additional year by mutual consent. Salary will be $45,000.00 per year.

The Stigma and Resilience among Vulnerable Youth Centre (SARAVYC) is a team of researchers and community partners advancing research to improve the lives of LGBTQ2S+ and sexually exploited youth. The successful candidate will have a background in qualitative research and health intervention design as well as experience in online communication environments. They will join an award winning applied, multi-disciplinary, mixed-methods research group. Besides the project listed below, the post-doctoral fellow will also be involved in other assessment and intervention research as needed.

The successful applicant, under supervision from our Executive Director will lead the development of health behavior interventions for LGBTQ2S+ youth, including culturally relevant approaches for East Asian, South Asian and Indigenous young people, as well as interventions for parents. To create the interventions the post-doctoral fellow will lead qualitative portions of in-depth mixed-methods family studies, with both youth and parents, to identify key topic areas for interventions, and capture cultural diversity in parental responses to LGBTQ2S+ youth. Some of these will be conducted using online focus groups of LGBTQ2S+ youth as well as in person or online focus groups with parents.

The goal of the project is to elicit culturally diverse examples of rejecting and accepting parental behaviours from youth and parents, and create interventions to support parents in supporting their LGBTQ2S+ young people. Another goal is to develop and gather feedback on behavior and health interventions designed for LGBTQ2S+ youth.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Project managing the implementation and analysis of focus groups, and intervention development
  • Creating, gathering feedback and producing intervention materials that inspire behavior change among diverse LGBTQ2S+ youth
  • Creating, gathering feedback and producing intervention materials that inspire behavior change among parents of LGBTQ2S+ youth
  • Supervising research coordinators, and assistants conducting participant recruitment, assisting with focus groups, and assisting in intervention development and writing
  • Developing research ethics applications, reports, academic papers, press releases, presentations and website content
  • Updating Executive and Managing Directors as well as collaborators at staff meetings, in email correspondence, and in phone conferences
  • Assisting in supervising research assistants working on other qualitative projects at SARA VYC
  • Other activities supporting SARAVYC research projects as required

Job Qualifications:

  • Completed a Ph.D. within the last 5 years (or shortly expect to complete) in a relevant discipline (e.g. education, public health, nursing, communications/media, sociology, anthropology)
  • Research record demonstrating experience developing interventions
  • Research record demonstrating qualitative research and awareness of how these methods need to be adapted for online interactions
  • Demonstrated understanding and experience working with LGTBQ2S+ youth and engagement with ethnoculturally diverse populations (East Asian, South Asian, Indigenous)
  • Experience managing others and project management (creating project charters, schedules, project management plans) considered an asset
