The Lab Operations Support Manager will supervise a team of laboratory operations staff to coordinate the organization and maintenance of MBL general use laboratory equipment, resources, and services in support of educational training and research activities, including but not limited to Advanced Research Training, undergraduate, and high school courses, research-related workshops, and the Whitman Center and Grass Fellowship programs. A critical role will be to serve as a liaison, in partnership with MBL’s Development Office, to corporate partners and assist in management of vendor loan equipment and supplies throughout the organization.  This position also works in close alignment with the Division of Research on the coordination of support to visiting and resident research programs. 

MAJOR DUTIES
  • Oversees resources and services related to laboratory operations including equipment and supplies.
  • Working with other program managers and departments, ensures coordination / responsibility and communication of lab operations resources organization wide. 
  • Provides support in the planning, organization, coordination, and scheduling of all educational and training activities including workshops in an efficient and productive manner.
  • Responsible for hiring and training staff, including interns and students, with a focus on attention to detail, customer support, and professionalism.
  • Manages staff by promoting teamwork, training, and coaching to develop employee skill sets.  Demonstrates comfort in delegating responsibility and authority appropriately to various internal and external stakeholders. Establishes clear goals and objectives for subordinates.
  • Serves as a liaison to faculty and researchers (including but not limited to Course Directors, workshop leaders, Whitman Scientists, and Grass fellows) for laboratory services.
  • Coordinate with other research services (including but not limited to CMF, MRC, Zebrafish facility) to provide support to education, training, and workshop functions.
  • Oversight of purchasing operations of equipment and related resources for all educational and training programs and research support services. 
  • Oversight of inventory of laboratory support operations capital equipment.
  • Helps to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all staff within the laboratory operations support including individuals and labs the unit serves.
EDUCATION/SKILLS/EXPERIENCE

Required:  Bachelor’s degree in a scientifically related field.  Five years managing administrative processes and operations related to purchasing, logistics, policy, and procedure development. Prioritization and ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously is required. Two years supervisory experience. Excellent organizational and communication skills, computer skills (database management and Excel) and a naturally inquisitive nature.
