This postdoctoral fellowship is a joint proposal to work on the EXIST (France, University of Lorraine) and INTERACT (Canada, University of Montreal) projects. We are looking for a post-doctoral fellow with a good understanding of health determinants, good writing and data analysis skills. The workload will be distributed 50% on each project.
EXIST is a research project aimed at producing an in-depth understanding of the origin of social inequalities associated with tobacco in adolescent populations, by taking into account the multiple determinants of smoking, in particular the interaction of environmental characteristics (social, physical and structural ) and individual ones (socioeconomic, psychological, behavioral, etc.), and their evolution over time. More specifically, the objectives of the project are (i) to better understand the mechanisms underlying the increase in inequalities linked to smoking during adolescence; and (ii) assess the effectiveness of tobacco prevention interventions implemented within the framework of public health policies, on adolescent smoking behavior while exploring their role in increasing these inequalities.
INTERACT (www.equipeinteract.ca) is an intervention research project investigating the impact of urban interventions on health and social inequalities in health. In particular, this postdoctoral fellowship is part of the gentrification component of the project, which seeks to better understand the links between urban investments, gentrification, and population health in Montreal. The fellow will contribute to more theoretical work on the mechanisms linking revitalization, gentrification and health, and to empirical analyzes with cohort data and environmental data in Montreal.
Primary Responsibilities
For EXIST, the postdoctoral fellow will be responsible for carrying out a literature review to identify all the determinants of smoking behaviors in adolescence.
This work will be carried out under the scientific direction of Laetitia Minary, researcher in epidemiology and principal investigator of the EXIST project. The postdoctoral fellow will also work in close collaboration with the researchers of the project, from different disciplines (epidemiology, psychology, sociology, geography, etc.) and approaches.
In collaboration with the interdisciplinary team of the project, the recruited person will :
- Carry out a review of scientific articles in various scientific documentation databases;
- Carry out the selection of articles;
- Analyze the content of the articles using a grid that he or she will have developed;
- Organize scientific exchanges with researchers to interpret the data;
- Participate in the writing of scientific articles.
For INTERACT, the post-doctoral fellow will be responsible for producing analyzes and drafting articles on INTERACT data, particularly on the Gentrification component.
This work will be carried out under the scientific direction of Yan Kestens, researcher and principal investigator of the INTERACT project. The fellow will work with a multidisciplinary team, bringing together researchers, postdoctoral fellows, students and knowledge users working on urban transformations and their impacts on health and equity.
In collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, the recruited person will:
- Contribute to writing an article on the links between urban investments, gentrification and health
- Carry out empirical analyzes and scientific articles on the links between the implementation of interventions on the built environment (bike paths, greening, place making, etc.) and physical activity, social connections and well-being, while considering the phenomenon of gentrification
- Work to consolidate links with local partners (City of Montreal, Tables de Quartiers, Public Health, etc.) on these issues
- Help supervise students and interns
Profile
Doctoral degree in epidemiology, public health or equivalent.

Structure
The research project EA 4360 APEMAC « Adaptation, mesure et évaluation en santé. Approches interdisciplinaires » is structured in teams :
- Team MICS (Nancy) : « Mesure et interventions complexes en santé ». It brings together specialists in epidemiology, clinical medicine, sports sciences, law and sociology.
- Team Epsam (Metz) : « Adaptation, comportements de santé et prise en charge psychologique ». It brings together specialists in psychology.
The person recruited will work within the MICS team in collaboration with a team of epidemiologists, psychologists, sociologists, health geographers, lawyers, experts in the evaluation of complex interventions.
The INTERACT project is co-directed by Yan Kestens (University of Montreal), Meghan Winters (Simon Fraser University) and Daniel Fuller (Memorial University). The SphereLab laboratory (Yan Kestens, www.spherelab.org) will welcome the recruited person.
