The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is an international non-profit organization dedicated to advancing science for the benefit of all people. For over a century, AAAS has been a force for science, from helping to establish science as a credible field in the 19th century to using satellite imaging technology to document human rights abuses in 2007. We are recognized as the world’s largest general scientific society and the proud publisher of the Science family of journals. Past presidents have included astronomer Edward Charles Pickering, anthropologist Margaret Mead, and biologist Stephen Jay Gould. Our mission is centered on the belief that STEM research and education can help solve many of the challenges the world faces today.

Work With Us

We are seeking a full-time Editor for the journal, Science Signaling. Since its launch in October 2008, Science Signaling has become one of the premier journals covering biological signaling and regulatory processes at all scales (molecules to cells to model organisms to man) and across the kingdoms (from viruses and bacteria to mammals) with an emphasis on research that is physiologically or pathophysiologically relevant. Science Signaling covers both experimental and experimental/computational (systems biological) studies. Under the direction of the Editor-in-Chief of the Science family of journals, the journal is poised for a new dynamic phase in its growth and development. We are looking for a seasoned editor or scientist to spearhead this effort.

The ideal candidate has research and management experience, broad interests, and an established network in the biological signaling community. The successful candidate will be expected to travel domestically and internationally to scientific meetings and institutions, to interact extensively with the scientific community, and to identify high-quality research for submission to the journal. Application Deadline extended to April 28, 2017.

  • Be the primary editor for a subset of papers.
  • Provide strategic guidance for the journal’s development, goals, and content
  • Supervise staff editors, monitor the editorial budget, and work closely with senior editorial and publishing staff to establish uniform policies and procedures.
  • Foster contacts and communication with the scientific community; attend meetings and liaise with top researchers in the fields of signaling and regulatory biology.
  • Interface with AAAS business, publishing, and marketing departments.
Key Requirements
  • PhD with postdoctoral research experience, plus at least 5 years of editorial experience and demonstrated skill in selecting and editing scientific research content.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • An aptitude and passion for the communication of science
  • Strong appreciation and interest in signaling research.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a high level of diplomacy.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects.
  • Knowledge of scholarly publishing and the competitive landscape is a plus.
Application Process

Interested candidates should submit a resume and cover letter by April 28, 2017. Up to three writing or other work samples may also be included as separate documents with your application. If we think you might be a good fit for the role, we will contact you with next steps.
