Postdoctoral Fellow in Training Healthcare Professionals in Behaviour Change Communication

Project summary:

This fellowship will be directly attached to a national CIHR-funded study designed to develop and test behaviour change communication training programs targeting physicians, nurses and allied healthcare providers in the area of chronic disease management. There will also be opportunities to work with other pertinent projects within the Montreal Behavioural Medicine Centre (http://mbmc-cmcm.ca).

Position summary:

This position provides individuals who have earned a doctoral degree with an opportunity for mentored training and experience in partnering with researchers who are engaged in the development and testing of behaviour change communication training programs targeting healthcare providers, with an emphasis on behavioural intervention development, the application of motivation and behaviour change theories to intervention design, behavioural trial methodology, and integrated knowledge translation. The fellow will work closely with Dr. Kim Lavoie (http://mbmc- cmcm.ca/member/ kim-lavoie-2/) and Dr. Simon Bacon (http://mbmc- cmcm.ca/member/simon-bacon/) on aspects related to the above project including:

  • Systematic reviews, meta-analyses and reporting
  • Qualitative and quantitative methods and analyses (including validation studies)
  • Behavioural intervention development and design
  • Behaviour change communication skills and training programs
  • Behavioural trial methods and reporting
  • Stakeholder engagement strategies
  • Grant writing
  • Manuscript writing and conference presentations
  • Ethics applications
Qualifications
  • PhD in Psychology or related clinical discipline (Kinesiology, Nursing, Medicine, Public Health)
  • Behavioural intervention and/or motivational communication and/or applied clinical experience
  • Experience conducting research in area related to chronic disease prevention (primary or secondary)
  • Experience with statistical methods and ability to work with analytic software
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated research productivity (peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations)
  • Ability to work autonomously and take a lead role on projects under supervision of principal investigators

Preference will be given to candidates with:

  • Experience with student mentoring and supervision
  • Experience using integrated stakeholder engagement strategies
  • Experience with behaviour change counselling or motivational communication
  • Openness to learn new methods and techniques in an applied clinical setting
  • Ability to actively participate in the development, refinement, execution and presentation of research
  • Ability to communicate (orally) in both English and French
Start date, Duration, Stipend, and Location
  • The start date is immediate but flexible; funding has already been received.
  • The position is full time for one year and is renewable. The annual stipend is consistent with CIHR funding levels ($40,000 CAD per annum + conference travel).
