Postdoctoral Fellow – Digital Platforms

At Mérida Labs, we are recruiting a motivated and solution-oriented postdoctoral fellow (PDF). Our group focuses on integrated energy systems research that encompasses breakthrough technologies, policy, energy conversion, new business models, techno-economic and life cycle analyses, machine learning, optimization, AI, intelligent networks, among others.

The PDF will join a team of peers working on multiple digitalization projects leveraging the UBC Smart Hydrogen Energy District, a city-scale testbed that integrates renewable energy and hydrogen technologies. These efforts in the group are geared towards developing digital platforms that will generate novel and unique datasets and models and enable the creation of cutting-edge approaches to broad questions in the realm of energy transition, decarbonization, and climate targets.

Some of the projects are conducted in collaboration with industry, where partners to date have included Siemens, TransLink, BC Hydro, FortisBC, among others.

The position will be embedded in a team where a high degree of interaction and collaboration is expected toward completion of all project objectives. This role will have the opportunity to develop the above lines of research, support and mentor student teams, and identify ways to expand the relationship with our partners and identify new research goals. In addition to excellent communication, project management, and technical writing skills, suitable candidates should also have the following:

Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, data science, mathematics, or related field completed within the last 3 years.
  • Strong programming skills in languages such as Python, C++, Java, SQL, or MATLAB, complemented by version control skills with Git.
  • Experience with machine learning, deep learning and data analysis tools and techniques e.g., Scikit-Learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch, Pandas, Grafana, real-time MQTT stack, Node.js, etc.
  • Experience in developing optimization models and algorithmic solutions tailored to research problems with state-of-the-art optimizers such as CPLEX or Gurobi.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a track record of publishing research.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team environment.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with experience in bridging research and real-world applications, through e.g. the creation and commercialization of new products
Desired Skills:
  • Experience in developing digital twin platforms or similar simulation models.
  • Familiarity with smart grid technologies, electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, and transportation modelling.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages such as Bash and PowerShell for automation and system administration tasks.

The fellowship will be for a one-year appointment, renewable subject to performance. The position is available from now until filled. Review of applications will begin immediately. Applications must include a cover letter and curriculum vitae and should be sent to Dr. Paolo Marcazzan (paolo.marcazzan@ubc.ca).
