Department of Materials Engineering | Amini Lab

Posting Expiry: 31 December 2026

Postdoctoral Position

The Amini Lab at the University of British Columbia (UBC) is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Fellow with expertise in the design, synthesis, and functionalization of redox-active materials for electrochemical energy storage.

The project aims to develop advanced redox-active materials with tailored electrochemical properties. A central focus is the synthesis and chemical modification of redox-active compounds to tune their redox potentials, electrochemical reversibility, reaction kinetics, and stability for energy-storage applications.

The postdoctoral fellow will contribute to research in areas including:

  • Design, synthesis, and functionalization of redox-active organic, inorganic, and/or coordination compounds;
  • Chemical modification of redox-active materials to systematically tune redox potentials and other electrochemical properties;
  • Electrochemical characterization of synthesized materials, including redox potentials, reversibility, reaction kinetics, and stability;
  • Investigation of structure–property relationships to understand the influence of chemical composition and functionalization on redox behavior;

The successful candidate will work in an interdisciplinary research environment with opportunities for collaboration with experts in electrochemistry and AI-enabled materials discovery.

About the Lab

The Amini Lab, led by Prof. Kiana Amini in the Department of Materials Engineering at UBC, conducts research in electrochemical engineering, with a focus on energy storage, carbon capture, and resource recovery.

Our research combines electrochemistry, materials development, and engineering to advance sustainable electrochemical technologies. Current research areas include redox flow batteries, electrochemical carbon capture, and electrochemical lithium extraction.

The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary research environment with opportunities to collaborate with academic and industrial partners.

Qualifications

Applicants should have, or be close to completing, a PhD in Chemistry, Materials Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in materials chemistry and the synthesis of redox-active materials, particularly:

  • Expertise in synthetic organic and/or inorganic/coordination chemistry;
  • Experience in the design, synthesis, and functionalization of redox-active molecules and materials;
  • Experience in chemical modification of materials to tune redox potentials and other redox properties;
  • Knowledge of relevant materials characterization techniques.

Experience in electrochemical characterization, particularly cyclic voltammetry and related techniques, would be an asset.

Candidates should have a strong publication record, good written and oral communication skills, and the ability to conduct independent research and work effectively in an interdisciplinary environment.

How to Apply

Interested candidates should email Prof. Kiana Amini at kiana.amini@ubc.ca with the subject line: "Postdoctoral Application – [Your Name]"

Please include:

  • A CV, including a publication list;
  • A brief description of your relevant research experience, particularly in materials synthesis and redox-active materials.

Applications will be reviewed as they are received until the position is filled. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. The anticipated start date will be mutually agreed upon.

Salary Ranges

The salary for this position is CAD $70,000 per year plus approximately 20% in benefits.

Candidates who hold external postdoctoral awards or fellowships (e.g., an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship) will receive an additional top-up.
