When was the last time you were in a presentation and you weren’t bored? Even worse, when was the last time you were giving a presentation and your audience wasn’t bored? Just because it’s interesting doesn’t mean it’s going to be remembered.

There is no one right way to communicate; therefore, this session will focus not on rules but on tools. In this interactive workshop participants will learn a series of communication tactics and hacks that they can practice and use in their next presentation.

This session will also apply strategies from Professional Wrestling, Toastmasters™ method, Dale Carnegie Training, busking, poker analysis, RCMP interrogation techniques, theatre and improv, combined with the learned experiences of the facilitator to enhance your public speaking skills.  Participants will leave this session with the confidence and tools required to successfully present and speak in front of others.

NOTE: Participants should come prepared to present a 1-2 minute presentation of their own work. Topics can be:

  • A presentation you have done recently
  • A presentation you will do in the near future.
  • Your current research and why it’s important

Those successfully registered will be required to submit 2-3 slides from a recent presentation in advance of the workshop.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the session, participants will have:

  • A toolkit of both verbal and non-verbal strategies designed to help you present in any situation
  • A series of cognitive and neurological ‘mind hacks’ that will help your presentations stand out.
  • An understanding of how to use body language to communicate confidently and create a strong impression when presenting virtually
  • An understanding of how to effectively make use of visuals.
  • A strategy for communicating complex ideas simply.
