This session is being offered in collaboration with Mitacs Training and the Graduate Pathways to Success Program. Mitacs Training provides professional development training to advanced degree graduates, supplementing their education and research experience with the tools necessary to succeed in today’s workforce.

More than ever, organizational success depends on people working together - effectively. The pressure to communicate productively, quickly turn ideas into profitable action and consistently deliver results never decreases. Using team simulation exercises, participants work from a clear understanding of personal strengths and an appreciation of the differences in others will be the foundation of success in the future.

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVE

To constitute an effective team, its members must share a common goal, have respect for each other, and be motivated to use the strengths of each member to achieve their objectives. Using team-based, hands-on, experiential learning exercises, the objective of this one-day workshop is to provide participants with an opportunity to build their ability and awareness participating in and leading an effective team unit that meets deadlines and sees results.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Through participating and completing this workshop, participants will:

FACILITATOR

Russel Horwitz, MEng, has worked extensively as a leadership consultant/trainer since 2004 across a wide variety of sectors, including government, publically-held, private and non-profit. Russel spent 14 years in the high technology/engineering sector, where he held management roles in product development, marketing, customer service and training. His expertise includes leadership and team development as well as executive coaching. As a facilitator, Russel draws on his experiences to connect to his audience by relating topics to personal, relevant stories. Russel has been working with the Mitacs Training program since 2008.

Registration in this session is required and Postdoctoral Fellows can register through the following link. Those successfully registered will receive an email within one week of the session date.

DELIVERY FORMAT

Due to the ongoing situation surrounding COVID-19, this session will be delivered online via Zoom. The following suggestions may help to improve the online experience:

  • Use headphones to reduce noise and avoid feedback between your mic and speaker.
  • Ensure that you are in a quiet location so that the audio does not get polluted with unwanted noise.
  • Keep your microphone on mute unless you are speaking during the session.
  • In case of technical problems, time for plugin downloads, etc., please attempt to log into the Zoom meeting 10-15 minutes before the start. You will be placed in the waiting room until the official start time.
