INFO SESSION: COMPLETING A PERSONAL TAX RETURN FOR POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWS

This session, hosted by tax accountant Terence Wong (Director of US and International Tax, Kingston Ross Pasnak LLP), will provide a general overview of the process of completing a T1 Personal Income Tax Return. Subjects to be included in this session will include:
- Introduction to a T1 Personal Income Tax Return
- What information is required
- Tax brackets
- General overview of a completed return
- Canadian residency rules and how Canadian tax treaties with various developed countries may override the Canadian rules
- Sources of income for Postdoctoral Fellows
- Employment income – introduction to the T4 slip
- Scholarships, bursaries, and fellowships – introduction to the T4A slip
- Common deductions and expenses associated with employment and fellowship incomes
- Common tax credits and benefits
- GST/HST
- Child tax benefits
- BC Climate Action Tax Credit
- BC Training and Education Savings Grant
- BC Family Benefit
- Brief review of certain Canadian registered plans
- RRSPs, TFSAs, FHSAs, and RESPs
Q&A SESSIONS
This information session will be followed by two Q&A sessions. Registrants are asked to please kindly attend the information session in order to attend the follow-up Q&A portion.
- Q&A – Canada and United States Tax Questions: 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM
- Q&A – International Tax Questions: 2:15 PM – 3:45 PM
FACILITATOR
Terence Wong

Terence is the Director of Kingston Ross Pasnak’s US and International Tax practice. As a current author/instructor for the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada and a former university instructor, he has been a business advisor with nearly 40 years of experience dealing with multi-national accounting and taxation issues faced by individuals and corporations. Being a designated Chartered Professional Accountant in Canada and a designated Certified Public Accountant in the US allows Terence to provide guidance on accounting and taxation related matters in both countries.
Prior to becoming an university/institute instructor and joining KRP, Terence was a partner with a Big-4 accounting firm. He has also been an instructor for CPA Canada, CPA Alberta and CPA British Columbia, providing him with invaluable experience in contributing to the growth of young professionals.

Please note that this is designed as a general information session. We will endeavor to answer as many questions as possible during the session, but may not be able to provide responses if questions are very situation-specific.
