A research team of sociologists and biologists at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver Campus, seeks a Postdoctoral Research Fellow.
The successful candidate will have a leading role in an NSERC funded research project looking at the impacts of synthesis science on the careers of ecology and evolution researchers. Synthesis science involves the analysis of large amounts of previously collected data in order to answer new questions. We will seek to understand how participation in synthesis research impacts research productivity and career success, and if this depends on whether participation is through formally organized research networks, ad hoc collaborations or individual initiative. An important part of this analysis is to consider the role of gender and career stage in moderating any career benefits from participation in synthesis or network research. This project promises to lead to new insight into the role of synthesis and network science in Canada, and the results will be communicated to research agencies and researchers as well as through academic publications.
Candidates should have completed their Ph.D. in sociology within the last five years and demonstrate proficiency with quantitative analysis of longitudinal data. We are particularly interested in candidates with interests in academic productivity and careers, cultures of scientific research, and gender equity. Candidates should also have: experience with database creation and management; excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills; fluency in spoken and written English; and a strong personal commitment to research.
Work will include: creation and management of a national database on university researchers in ecology and evolution; supervising and mentoring of undergraduate students involved in the creation of the database; collaboration with data scientists, sociologists and biologists; online survey development; data compilation and statistical analysis; and writing and submission of academic manuscripts. The postdoctoral research fellow will be mentored in this project by university faculty in Sociology and Zoology, and will receive logistical assistance from the Canadian Institute of Ecology and Evolution (CIEE).
