The Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy (OSOT), Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver campus invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow for a full time, 12-month appointment. The position may be extended for an additional year by mutual agreement and funding availability. The salary will be $50,000.00 per year plus benefits including extended health and dental coverage.
Working directly with Dr. Skye Barbic, Assistant Professor at OSOT and the lead for Foundry Research and Innovation Program, the successful candidate will have a strong background in health services research, mixed methods research, measurement, health intervention design, as well as experience in implementation science. The Foundry Research and Innovation team (foundrybc.ca) advances studies and interventions to improve the health experiences and outcomes of young people with mental health and substance use challenges.
The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will collaborate with UBC and national research teams and community partners, leading analysis of a three-year longitudinal supported employment program, drawing on resources and community programs focused on integrated youth health services, individual placement support, and youth advocacy. The focus will be on writing empirical peer reviewed journal articles to share the findings and make recommendations for supported employment as a core integrated youth health service. The incumbent will lead the drafting of peer-reviewed manuscripts in collaboration with Dr. Barbic and her research team. There will also be opportunities to co-author additional papers related to the analysis and research questions being led by other members of the research team. Grant writing, including CIHR and MSFHR project and Postdoctoral Research Fellow applications will be mentored as a means for extending the appointment, and bridging the successful applicant to a tenure track position.
Responsibilities will include
- Independent analyses of longitudinal questionnaire and qualitative data;
- Independent psychometric analyses for existing patient-reported outcome measures;
- Organizing weekly research team and supervisor meetings;
- Writing research abstracts, summary reports, and scientific articles, and submitting articles to peer-reviewed journals;
- Leading minimum 4 academic papers over one year appointment;
- Presenting study results to the scientific community at national and international conferences;
- Providing administrative, e-health and/or social media assistance as directed
- Organizing and collecting data, helping coordinate research assistants and graduate students to support these activities
- Identifying and pursuing secondary research projects and research funding
- Collaborating with the other research teams
Job Qualifications
- Completed (within the last 5 years) or near completion (with a confirmed defense date) of a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline (e.g., e-health, public health, communications/media, health sciences, psychology, rehabilitation science, measurement, population and public health);
- Research record demonstrating mixed methods and measurement research expertise congruent with career stage;
- Demonstrated familiarity with and interest in youth mental health research;
- Demonstrated ability to thrive in a collaborative team environment;
- High personal motivation, self-management, detail-orientated; ability to take responsibility for meeting deadlines;
- Excellent communication skills, including strong writing, research, and interpersonal skills;
- Must be able to demonstrate evidence of teamwork and a solid background with related educational credentials.
- Experience in supervising research assistants and graduate students will be an asset;
- Strong relational skills and be able to exert influence and work across sectors (hospitals, primary care and community);
- High degree of comfort with change, and the ability to be agile and adaptable as the projects evolve in large complex health systems and their health technologies;
- Demonstrated skills in data management and programming using statistical packages (SAS and occasionally STATA and R);
- Demonstrated knowledge of research processes, systematic reviews, and syntheses; Education/training and experience in quantitative research methods, and multivariate statistical analysis;
- Ability to work independently and without direct supervision and problem solve technical and methodological issues that arise during the course of the research; Must be able to exhibit a high level of professionalism, judgement, ethical conduct, discretion and diplomacy.
