The Substance use and Health in Emerging Adulthood (SHEA) lab at St. Francis Xavier University, led by Dr. Kara Thompson, is seeking a highly motivated full-time postdoctoral fellow holding a PhD in psychology or a closely related field to start immediately.

The initial appointment is for 1 year, with possibility of renewal. Salary will commensurate with experience ($40,000 -$50,000) and includes 3 weeks paid holidays and paid statutory holidays, and health benefits.

The successful candidate(s) will help coordinate research projects related to substance use and mental health in young adults. Current research projects include:

  • The Univenture project: evaluation of a multi-site targeted wellness program to address heavy drinking and other substance misuse on Canadian campuses.
  • Sex and Cannabis: an examination of the sex-specific psychophysiological markers of risk for physical and mental health problems across modes of cannabis use using a daily diary study.
  • Campus Alcohol Policy Program: A knowledge translation project involving a comparative analysis of campus alcohol policies across Atlantic Canadian universities.
  • Enhancing Cannabis Management Skills: An Evaluation of the Echeckup to Go Program.

Primary responsibilities will include overseeing project progress, conducting data analysis, preparing for conference presentations and scientific manuscript writing for publication in peer-reviewed journals, supervising research assistants, and assistingin submission of research grant applications. The Postdoctoral fellow will have opportunities to work on ecological momentary assessment data, multi-wave longitudinal data, and randomized control trial dataand will have opportunities to collaborate with highly respected scientists nationally.

Qualifications:

  • A doctoral degree in developmental psychology, human development and family studies, applied psychology, educational psychology, or a related area.
  • Strong background/interests in adolescent/emerging adult substance use, mental health, policy, or program evaluation.
  • Strong analytical skills such as structural equation modeling and multilevel modeling using Mplus, or R
  • Strong background in applied research and data analysis. Experiences with collecting and analyzing diary and other intensive longitudinal data an asset.
  • Evidence of self-directed independent scholarship, strong interpersonal, leadership,and communication skills, and outstanding writing skills.
  • Demonstrated record of independent scientific productivity, as evidenced by a history of peer reviewed publications is required.
  • The ability to work effectively in a fast-paced research environment with minimal supervision is essential.
  • Ability to effectively lead and direct other students and research assistants and to collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience with knowledge mobilization and program evaluation an asset.
