Postdoctoral Research Fellow - UCN, TRIUMF

Posting Expiry

The Canadian Ultracold Neutron (UCN) group is currently accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. The UCN collaboration has constructed and is commissioning a new primary proton beam line at TRIUMF. The spallation target and neutron moderators were installed and first cold neutrons were produced in 2016. This year, the UCN source will be installed and first UCN shall be produced. The group is also engaged in the design and development of the first UCN experiment using this sourcea measurement of the neutron's electric dipole moment (EDM).

The successful candidate will focus on and contribute in a significant manner to the development of the neutron EDM experiment, UCN source, and associated facilities at TRIUMF. In addition, he/she will also be expected to assume certain responsibilities to support the commissioning of the UCN source and neutron handling system. The successful applicant will be expected to:

  • Significantly contribute to EDM systematic studies (analytical and simulation)
  • Work on the EDM apparatus at TRIUMF, and contribute to the HV and EDM cell development
  • Develop proposals for, participate in, and analyze data for new experiments
  • Disseminate results as articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals and at national and international conferences and workshops
  • Supervise undergraduate and/or graduate students

Applicants must have knowledge of UCN or EDM related physics and several years of graduate level hardware experience in one or more of the following areas: detector, beam line, cold/ultracold neutrons, magnetic fields and magnetometry, or data acquisition development. Qualifications include a recent Ph.D. in accelerator, atomic, nuclear, or particle physics, and those individuals who are expecting to complete a PhD within two months are also encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills, high attention to detail, and the flexibility to deal with changing priorities.

This grant funded position will be based at TRIUMF and the term of employment will be based on an initial commitment to a one year term, with a start date as early as April 2017.
