Job Summary
Working within a dynamic research group with a proven track record of achievements and contributions in human genetics and translational biomedical research. This position allows the candidate to develop bold and innovative research into clinical, therapeutic, and epidemiological aspects of human genetic disease.
This position’s primary focus in the lab will be to lead projects related to the population genetics of Huntington disease, as part of ongoing therapeutic and epidemiological research. Using the wide network of connections and collaborations of the principal investigator, and extensive clinical and genetic resources available at the institution, candidates will be able to build on existing research of the lab to quickly start up their own research projects.
This position provides a unique opportunity for mentoring trainees, supervising technicians, and interacting with industry. This is an excellent platform to receive outstanding training for a successful academic or medical research career, with preparation in clinical genetics, therapeutic development, and industry collaboration.
This full-time grant funded position with the University of British Columbia, Centre for Molecular Medicine & Therapeutics will allow the candidate to flourish under the guidance of an experienced mentor who is the most cited author in the field of Huntington Disease.
Organizational Status:
The Postdoctoral Fellow will play a leadership role in the Hayden lab, and will be reporting directly to Dr. Michael Hayden who is the primary investigator of the laboratory.
Work Performed
- Management and supervision of technicians and research associates;
- May be involved in recruitment and training of technicians;
- Performing regular reviews of the relevant literature;
- Planning and designing of projects and single experiments;
- Analyzing, interpreting, and compiling data in study reports. Presenting results and participating in the preparation of scientific manuscripts and grant application packages;
- Updating Dr. Hayden and the research group on the status of projects during lab meetings, in email correspondence, and in phone conferences;
- Managing projects with key academic and industry partners.
Minimum Qualifications
- PhD degree in the biosciences or relevant clinical discipline
- At least 4 years’ experience in laboratory research, clinical research, or a combination of both
- Extensive knowledge of molecular biology and human genetics
- Experience with clinical genetics or bioinformatics is a plus
- Proven ability to multi-task in a deadline oriented environment with minimal supervision
- Effective oral and written communication, analytical and interpersonal skills
- Excellent organizational skill and ability to learn new skills quickly
- Ability to work independently and within a team environment.

- Candidates should demonstrate the ability to work in a highly interdisciplinary environment

- Works independently under direction of PI, Dr. Michael Hayden
- Opportunities to work collaboratively with Industry partners and other researchers at UBC and globally
SUPERVISION GIVEN:
- Assists and oversees research assistants and students as required
- Assists and provides guidelines to other research members, as required
CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR/JUDGEMENT
- Study may be jeopardized if not conducted according to ethical requirements as laid out by the University and by regulatory authorities
- Study files must be kept secured to ensure that patient confidentiality is not compromised
- An error within the realm of a research study may result in biased or incomplete data and skewed study results
- Errors made could influence the ability of the research team to meet critical deadlines, as well as compromise the results of research project, and therefore impact the credibility of the Principal Investigator. Poor decisions may be damaging to the reputation of the Principal Investigator, the School, and the University and could lead to incorrect or inappropriate policy recommendations being made.
