Postdoctoral Fellowship in Health Economics of Multidisciplinary Care
Rheumatic diseases, consisting of over 100 types of conditions, are the most common cause of severe chronic pain and disability in Canada. High-quality care of rheumatic disease requires access to early treatments and coordinated multidisciplinary support and care. In recognition of patients’ needs and accumulating evidence, British Columbia introduced a multidisciplinary care billing code for management of patients with complex rheumatic diseases in 2012. However, it remains unclear whether the BC approach to implementing multidisciplinary care and management would result in real-world benefits that mirror those found in more tightly controlled research settings. Therefore, it is important to evaluate whether use of this billing opportunity in BC is promoting the same benefits.
This project will use a mixed-methods approach to evaluate the implementation and impact of the introduction of multidisciplinary care for patients with rheumatic diseases. The health economics components of this work include qualitative methods to describe and understand the models of care being used, quasi-experimental methods, such as comparative interrupted time series (CITS), to evaluate the impact of introducing the multidisciplinary billing code in British Columbia, and budget impact analysis to inform decision makers in other Canadian provinces of the financial implications of adopting a similar multidisciplinary billing code. The results of this project will contribute significantly to policy development related to the provision of multidisciplinary care for chronic diseases in Canada.
Applicants will have a PhD in epidemiology, health economics, health services research, health policy, or another discipline related to economic/policy evaluation, with some previous experience and interests in the evaluation of policy or public health interventions. The successful applicant will be responsible for health economics research related to the delivery of multidisciplinary care in rheumatic and other chronic diseases. The Fellow will have the opportunity to be mentored by and collaborate with leading researchers at UBC, work with patients, stakeholders at the British Columbia Ministry of Health, and clinical partners, to mentor junior trainees, and contribute to teaching.
