Research topic

Eventual transnational and collaborative practices in art education

Research Description

My research mostly focuses on eventual transnational art practices entangled with more-than-human elements and explores embodied forms of knowledge within pedagogical events, particularly those occurring within the context of galleries and museums. I am keenly interested in experimental learning and the corresponding relation between the body, objects, and space in art practices to form a creative space that welcomes the unknown, the unpredictable, and the realm of possibilities—both ontologically and epistemologically—within our dynamic socio-material encounters. I follow art practices that have the potential to be adopted across borders and collaboratively to activate an ethics of care not only for ourselves but also for others in close proximity. In my research, these prospective art practices extend beyond the context of museums and galleries, reaching into the interconnected relationships formed between bodies, objects, and spaces within other contexts and fields of study. I am particularly interested in the socio-cultural dimensions of pedagogical events as well. As an artist, teacher, and researcher, I aim to explore new ways of sharing, becoming, and adapting to life that revolves around art events in public spheres, offering opportunities for mutual sharing of information and modes of knowledge organization. These endeavours will contribute to the formation of a vector of public pedagogy built upon communities of practice, pluralism, and socialization.

Why did you decide to pursue a postdoctoral fellowship at UBC? Did you consider other opportunities?

I believe that engaging in research and working as a post-doc will significantly enhance my professional skills and prepare me for a successful transition into the academic world. I chose UBC for its outstanding academic and research environment, as it provides an ideal platform for innovative collaboration that perfectly aligns with my research interests and career aspirations. While I did consider other opportunities, UBC's world-class faculty, its dynamic academic community, and its unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of knowledge were pivotal factors in my decision. Furthermore, the specific research projects and resources available at UBC closely matched my area of expertise, providing an ideal setting for me to further develop my research. I am especially thankful to my Supervisor, Dr. Anita Sinner, for this fellowship. She provided me with the opportunity to enhance my professional growth in an exceptional academic environment.

What specifically attracted you to your research group?

What specifically attracted me to the research group was the welcoming and friendly environment to work on cutting-edge projects at the intersection of my field of expertise and the broader scope of the group's research. The diverse and multidisciplinary nature of the individuals, along with the collaborative spirit of them, was also a significant draw. the guidance and mentorship provided by the group's experienced researchers, including my supervisor, Dr. Anita Sinner, played a vital role in my decision to join.

What advice do you have for new postdoctoral fellows?

For new postdoctoral fellows, I would recommend establishing open lines of communication and actively participating in networking opportunities within your field, such as conferences and workshops. This approach will help foster collaborations and provide you with valuable insights. Additionally, I suggest evaluating your own work and actively seeking constructive feedback. I believe it's essential to view this journey not only as research work but also as an opportunity for exploration and personal growth. By embracing challenges and cherishing the learning experience, you can overcome obstacles and transform tensions into valuable experiences.

What do you like to do for fun?

As a foreigner coming from the Middle East, I've always worked diligently to overcome the challenges in my life. Consequently, there often hasn't been much time to focus on leisure activities, aside from spending quality time with family and friends.

What is the most enjoyable aspect of your postdoctoral fellowship?

The most enjoyable aspect of my postdoctoral fellowship is the opportunity to explore new areas of research and expand my knowledge boundaries, all while contributing to the advancement of knowledge in that specific field. The satisfaction derived from making significant progress and the chance to collaborate with experts in the field are truly rewarding experiences.

What are the biggest challenges you have faced, or anticipate facing, in your career?

One of the significant challenges in our field of study is the scarcity of opportunities in both post-doctoral and job positions in art education. This can pose a considerable obstacle to early-career researchers seeking to advance in their careers and make meaningful contributions to their respective fields specially when they have international status. Consequently, securing these opportunities and navigating the competitive landscape of academia and research becomes a critical aspect of our career path.
