Determination and prediction of ultraviolet radiation induced damages in RNA/DNA using long-range sequencing techniques

Research Description

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is an advanced disinfection approach used in different fields, such as water reuse, wastewater, drinking water and air. While UV has been effective in microorganisms’ inactivation, its efficacy so far has been evaluated using conventional culturing techniques, which is not representative of the impacted medium’s diverse microbiome. This research aims to utilize long-range sequencing methods combined with long-range qPCR procedures for detecting UV-induced damage to fully evaluate and assess the impact of UVC. Further, applying machine learning techniques to develop models to predict the damaged sites with UV range. While this research is designed to address the water disinfection reliability using UV disinfection technology, the outcome can be expanded to other UVC-exposed media.

Why did you decide to pursue a postdoctoral fellowship at UBC? Did you consider other opportunities?

UBC is an internationally renowned institution with a global reputation, pursuing excellence in research and learning. The Environmental Biotechnology cluster inside the Civil Engineering Department currently has some of the world’s leading experts with extensive research experience in environmental engineering, including a focus on the fate of microorganisms impacted by various disinfection systems is invaluable for my proposed research. Above all the available resources and expertise, the inclusivity at UBC is another big motivator for me to stay and continue my research here.

What advice do you have for new postdoctoral fellows?

It is very important to focus on the subject that excites you everyday and more importantly the group and mentor that you are working with. The support within a group can facilitate and support your success to a great extent.

What is the most enjoyable aspect of your postdoctoral fellowship?

The most enjoyable aspect is working with the people I work with daily. I specifically like the brainstorming session that Dr. Beck and I have and our discussions about various scientific subjects.

What does receiving this award mean for your career?

It is great to see that the subject we are working on got approved and funded by NSERC. This is one degree of validation proving that we are on the right track and our work is as exciting to us as to others.
