Introduction to R
  • Dates: September 18, 2019; October 16, 2019; November 13, 2019; January 16, 2020; February 6, 2020
  • Time: 2:00pm – 4:00pm
  • Workshop Description: In this workshop, you are introduced to R and RStudio at the beginner level. This condensed 2-hour workshop is meant to get you started in R and acts as a pre-requisite for ALL of the other workshops (below).

Each hands-on series below is covered in two, three-hour sessions over a one-week period.

1)    The R tidyverse
  • Dates: Monday, September 23 and Wednesday, September 25, 2019
  • Time: 1:00pm – 4:00pm each day
  • Workshop Description: In this workshop, we delve into data manipulation using dplyr / tidyr and graphics with ggplot in R. We teach different ways to manipulate data in tabular and text forms as well as the critical concepts underlying the grammar of graphics and how they are implemented in R. We will use RStudio, a powerful but user-friendly R environment, and teach you how to use it effectively.
2)    Reproducible research
  • Dates: Monday, October 21 and Wednesday, October 23, 2019
  • Time: 1:00pm – 4:00pm each day
  • Workshop Description: In this series, we introduce computational reproducibility and its importance to modern research. We will teach the general principles for reproducible computer-based analyses, along with specific methods and tools for reproducibility and version control with RStudio and GitHub.
3)    Intermediate R programming
  • Dates: Monday, November 18 and Wednesday, November 20, 2019
  • Time: 1:00pm – 4:00pm each day
  • Workshop Description: In this workshop, you use R as a programming environment, allowing you to write more complex, yet clearer data analysis code. We will teach you three fundamental concepts of R programming: functions, classes, and packages.
4)    The R tidyverse
  • Dates: Tuesday, January 21, 2020 and Thursday, January 23, 2020
  • Time: 1:00pm – 4:00pm each day
  • Workshop Description: In this workshop, we delve into data manipulation using dplyr / tidyr and graphics with ggplot in R. 5)    Statistical models in R
  • Dates: Tuesday, February 11, 2020 and Thursday, February 13, 2020
  • Time: 1:00pm – 4:00pm each day
  • Workshop Description: In this workshop series, we introduce various types of regression models and how they are implemented in R. We will cover linear regression, ANOVA, ANCOVA and mixed effects models for continuous response data, logistic regression binary response data, and Poisson and Negative Binomial regression for count response data.

Possible new workshop in March TBA. Check https://ecoscope.ubc.ca/events/.
