Are you interested in biology and science communication?

About our Team

Current Biology is run by a small and highly experienced team who, working closely together, decide the content of the journal: in particular, with the help of expert advisers and referees, they select the original research papers for publication, and they also commission articles in a diverse range of formats for the journal’s magazine section.

About the Role

As a member of the Current Biology team, you would be involved, working in close collaboration with the rest of the team, in assessing papers that are offered to the journal – deciding which to consider formally, where appropriate selecting referees, overseeing peer review and making and communicating post-review decisions. You would also be expected to contribute to the commissioning of front matter articles, such as commentaries and reviews, and editing these articles to a high standard. Both of these activities involve an expert knowledge base and close interaction with the relevant scientific communities; you will have the opportunity to build networks of contacts by visiting research institutes and attending scientific conferences.

Responsibilities

  • Assessing research papers submitted to journal and ensuring that they meet the minimum standards to be sent to peer review.
  • Assisting our Editor-in-Chief with decisions on selecting new submissions for publication
  • Becoming a trusted business partner to our stakeholder management team by building successful and collaborative relationships
  • Attending conferences and visiting academic institutes to develop and maintain links with the international scientific research community
  • Assess submitted research papers, making editorial recommendations, and overseeing the peer review process

Requirements

  • PhD in a relevant scientific discipline (life or medical sciences)
  • A talent for clear communication and ability to summarise complex science in a concise manner
  • A self-starter with a passion for learning

When applying for the position, please include your CV and a cover letter that is written specifically with this job in mind. Previous editorial or publishing experience is not necessary – we will make sure you get the training and development you need.

Responsibilities

Developing and maintaining relationships with our global respiratory medicine communities to attract high-quality research for the journal

Attending conferences and events to represent the journal, keeping up to date with current developments in respiratory medicine, and identifying potential topics of interest

Managing the Spotlight section of journal, which published thought provoking essays and features on global health issues. Writing editorials and other content for the journal as required. Helping develop new initiatives for future development of the journal
