Postdoctoral Fellow - Battery Electrification Modeling for Car-Sharing

Posting Expiry

The Vancouver City Council has approved amendments to the Climate Action Plan to incentivize car-share providers, and to shift their fleets from internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEV) to zero-emission vehicles
(ZEV). Car-sharing is becoming a major transportation mode in Vancouver, with a third of the adult population willing to shift from the use of privately own vehicles to a shared car system for some of their
trips. If the trend continues and more electric car-sharing vehicles are deployed, the energy demand and the charging infrastructure need to be estimated.

The ideal candidate for this position, will develop data-driven energy models based on large driving cycle datasets, to simulate the operation of a battery-electrified car-share fleet. The model will be utilized to find
optimal charging infrastructure to support the operation.

Scope of Job

This position is a combination of data-science and optimization skills.

Responsibilities:
a. Develop a spark-apache pipeline for the collection and management of the data (real time or off-line).
b. Implement an energetic model of the car-sharing fleet considering battery-electrification.
c. Script an optimization framework targeting the best charging infrastructure to serve the operation of a battery-electrified car-share fleet.
d. Maintain documentation of work progress.
e. Document in detail scripts and maintain code through version control.

Qualifications
a. PhD. or MASc. degree in data-science, operations and management, industrial engineering, computer science, electrical or mechanical engineering or a combination of professional and academic experience.
b. Data mining skills is a must.
c. Experience working with optimization solvers, formulation of optimization problems and mathematical programming is a must.
d. Good communication skills.
e. Experience writing technical reports, peer-reviewed papers.
f. Experience delivering presentations on the findings of research.
