Research Description

My research draws on the study of literature and literary theory to intervene in contemporary debates within the life sciences and science studies, from the interwoven science and politics of the COVID-19 pandemic to ongoing transformations of evolutionary theory. I have completed two book manuscripts in my time at UBC: Virality Vitality, which demonstrates that viruses interact with cells in ways that undermine our basic concepts of life and bring cultural and ethical-political questions inside scientific research itself, and Natural Lection: Cultures of Evolution, a study of the scientific and political implications of past and present attempts to explain human culture using evolutionary theory.

Why did you decide to pursue a postdoctoral fellowship at UBC? Did you consider other opportunities?

I did have another offer when I received my offer from UBC, but I decided that the research environment at UBC, including the support I have received from the English and STS programs, was best suited to supporting my interdisciplinary research.

What advice do you have for new postdoctoral fellows?

It is very difficult as a postdoc to form relationships with other scholars on campus, but this is essential to developing your ideas in conversation with others.

What is the most enjoyable aspect of your postdoctoral fellowship?

The time and support to research, the wonderful people at UBC, and the beautiful city of Vancouver.

What are the biggest challenges you have faced, or anticipate facing, in your career?

Finding long-term employment such as a tenure-track professorship.

What does receiving this award mean for your career?

Hopefully it will help me to obtain a tenure-track position. The financial award will be very useful as I will have to move across the country at the end of the summer to start a new two-year postdoctoral position.
