The Postdoctoral Fellows Office in the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies is pleased to announce the winners of the 2023 Killam Postdoctoral Fellow Research Prize. Both recipients will receive an award of $5,000 for outstanding research achievements during their time as UBC Postdoctoral Fellows.
The winners of the 2022 Killam Postdoctoral Fellow Research Prize are:
- Dr. Femke Hoekstra (Faculty of Health and Social Development
- Dr. Julia Kreiner (Faculty of Science)
Dr. Hoekstra is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the School of Health and Exercise Science in the Faculty of Health and Social Development at UBC Okanagan. Her research focuses on understanding and improving the translation of physical activity research findings to practice and policy settings. She has a specific interest and expertise in health behavioural change research related to people with spinal cord injury and other physical disabilities.
Dr. Kreiner is a Killam Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Botany within the Faculty of Science at UBC Vancouver. Her research focuses on disentangling factors that limit or facilitate genetic adaptation to new environments. She studies these concepts in waterhemp, a pervasive agricultural weed in North America, using cutting-edge population genomic approaches bolstered by analyses of both historical and contemporary DNA samples, theoretical inference, and field experiments.
The Killam Postdoctoral Fellow Research Prize is awarded annually for excellence in research. Established in 2011, the Killam PDF Prize is in memory of Izaak Walton Killam and his wife, Dorothy Johnston Killam, who together created the Killam trusts. Two prizes in the amount of $5,000 each are awarded to fulltime Postdoctoral Fellows at UBC in recognition of outstanding research and scholarly contributions while at UBC.
