This workshop is designed to provide background information on equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) initiatives in academia, and strategies for writing personal EDI commitment statements.

Addressing systemic barriers in academia and the workplace has a relatively recent history in Canada, ranging from the Employment Equity Act in 1986 to current federal EDI requirements in research proposals. This workshop will provide background information and context on the major drivers of EDI initiatives in universities, why EDI is important in research and work environments, and provide some strategies for writing personal EDI statements – a recent and growing element of many faculty searches. EDI statements are one tool many organizations are using to evaluate whether a potential candidate’s experience and principles aligns with its institutional values. The session will also include discussion on how job-seekers can consider the EDI commitments of potential employers and action their own commitments. This workshop includes strategies for developing a statement and participants will receive a template and additional resources for writing their own.
