Over the past several weeks, the PDFO has been hearing from Postdoctoral Fellows regarding some of the challenges that are arising within the postdoc community due to the COVID-19 situation. To better understand these challenges and hear from the postdoc community directly about your questions, concerns, and issues, the PDFO invites UBC Vancouver-appointed Postdoctoral Fellows to attend a Virtual Town Hall Meeting on Monday, June 29, 2020 from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM.

Dr. Gail Murphy

Vice President, Research & Innovation

Dr. Gail Murphy

Gail C. Murphy is a Professor of Computer Science and Vice-President Research and Innovation at the University of British Columbia. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), as well as co-founder, board member and former Chief Scientist at Tasktop Technologies Incorporated.

After completing her B.Sc. at the University of Alberta in 1987, she worked for five years as a software engineer in the Lower Mainland. She later pursued graduate studies in computer science at the University of Washington, earning first a M.Sc. (1994) and then a Ph.D. (1996) before joining UBC.

Dr. Murphy’s research focuses on improving the productivity of software developers and knowledge workers by providing the necessary tools to identify, manage and coordinate the information that matters most for their work. She also maintains an active research group with post-doctoral and graduate students.

Dr. Susan Porter

Dean and Vice-Provost, Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies

Dr. Susan Porter

Susan Porter has been the Dean and Vice-Provost of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies at UBC since 2013. She is also a Clinical Professor in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine, and has served in sequential roles in graduate and postdoctoral administration at UBC since 2000.

Karen Vaughan

Director, UBC Child Care Services

For the past 25 years, Karen has worked in the field of early childhood care and education in a variety of roles including working directly with children as well as teaching Child Development to ECE students.  Karen recently graduated from UBC with her Masters in Education.  Prior to joining UBC as the Director of Child Care Services, Karen worked for Vancouver Coastal Health Authority as a Child Care Licensing Officer.

Registration in this Town Hall is required and is now available. Those successfully registered will receive a confirmation email in advance of the meeting with the Zoom access information.

Please submit any questions that you would like to have addressed in this Town Hall via the registration form until end of day on Wednesday, June 17, 2020. Registrations may continue to be submitted up to Sunday, June 28 at 6:00 PM PT but we may not be able to accomodate questions received after June 17.

Delivery Format

This session will be delivered online via Zoom. The following suggestions may help to improve the online experience:

  • Use headphones to reduce noise and avoid feedback between your mic and speaker.
  • Ensure that you are in a quiet location so that the audio does not get polluted with unwanted noise.
  • Keep your microphone on mute unless you are speaking during the session.
  • In case of technical problems, time for plugin downloads, etc., please attempt to log into the Zoom meeting 10-15 minutes before the start. You will be placed in the waiting room until the official start time.
