** This workshop is intended for those postdoctoral fellows seeking career opportunities within industry. **

This practical, hands-on workshop for Postdoctoral Fellows will equip you to structure and polish a targeted and compelling resume for professional career opportunities in industry, beyond university faculty positions. This full-day workshop will introduce tips for constructing a customized resume that industry leaders won't overlook. Through samples, case examples, peer review, and individual coaching learn what works and what doesn't. Supported by facilitators, participants will have the opportunity to target their resumes in the afternoon.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will:

  • Be introduced to essential style and structural components of a professional resume
  • Explore case examples and critically examine their own resumes
  • Learn strategies for “data-mining” relevant skills/experiences and organizing resumes to present compelling evidence of fit
  • Develop resume writing skills through targeting and polishing their own resumes
  • Be introduced to examples of successful cover letters

Prerequisites:

Prepare for this workshop by developing a "master resume" that compiles all your past work accomplishments, experience, education, and community involvement into a single document. Don't worry about format, although a consistent style will be helpful. Bring a printed copy as well as a "soft copy" on your laptop or tablet (not on your smart phone, as you'll be editing and formatting this document during the afternoon). Also bring 1-2 job advertisements or job descriptions to the workshop as a focus for your targeted resume.

Registration:

Registration is required, please register online. Successfully registered postdocs will receive a confirmation email within one week prior to the workshop.

Preference will be given to senior postdoctoral fellows who are in their final year at UBC.
