The Postdoctoral Fellows Office (PDFO) is pleased to offer How to Keep your Cash: the Canadian Tax System. Whether you're looking for tips and advice on how to better file your taxes as a postdoc, or are new to Canada and need an overview of the Canadian Tax System, this workshop will provide you with the information you need. This workshop is facilitated by tax experts from KPMG with experience assisting postdocs. All UBC postdocs are invited to attend.

About the Presenters:

Dave Magdalinski, CMA - Partner, Tax at KMPG:

Dave is a Partner in the Tax practice in Edmonton and KPMG’s regional Public Sector Tax Leader. He has more than 12 years of experience serving various not-for-profit organizations including universities and local governments.

In this role, he devotes significant time to various tax issues related to not-for-profit organizations. This includes working with organizations to develop policies and procedures regarding taxable benefits and other tax matters as well as assistance with understanding the tax rules for Charities. Prior to joining KPMG in 2000, Dave spent four years with the Canada Revenue Agency where he worked in the audit division and on various special investigation projects.

Dave is a graduate of the University of Alberta. He currently sits on the board for three not-for-profit organizations as well as being a group study leader for the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA), Part II, in-depth tax program.

Terence Wong, CA, CPA - Partner at KPMG:

Terence leads KPMG’s U.S. and Cross Border Tax practice in Edmonton and the Region practice in Western Canada and is part of KPMG International's global tax network. For the past 21 years, he has served numerous clients designing and implementing tax reduction strategies for Canadian and International businesses, financing and investment using offshore entities, tax planning and compliance for multinational concerns, international executive tax planning and compliance, and cross-border corporate reorganizations.

Terence has reviewed numerous US tax withholding matters and the US charitable tax filing for Universities. He also has extensive experience with US personal tax return preparation which is extremely valuable for him to be able to provide proactive advice regarding individual personal tax issues.
