This Postdoctoral Fellowship will be closely tied to a research project funded by the Queen Elizabeth Scholars – Advanced Scholars – West Africa (QES-AS-WA) program.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will collaborate with the partner institutions and community partner organizations in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana and Canada to initiate, develop, and implement collaborative research projects to address key community issues for persons with disabilities and their families in health equity and inclusive education systems, with a particular focus on addressing gender inequities therein.

In particular, the Postdoctoral Fellow will 1) receive specialized training in community-based participatory research (CBPR); 2) support the collaborative research projects; and 3) travel to Ghana to support research implementation in partnership with local community partner organizations.

Key responsibilities:
  • Participate in an intensive, 14-day summer institute on CBPR at Queen’s University.
  • Collaborate on research projects with Ghanian Scholars and community partner organizations.
  • Provide peer support and orientation to Ghanian Scholars and participate in community activities during their stay in Canada.
  • Support research with Canadian Family Alliance partners in Canada.
  • Remain engaged in a virtual network with Congolese and Ghanian Scholars and community partner organizations School of Rehabilitation Therapy, Queen’s University, Canada
  • Travel to Ghana in the Fall 2022 or Winter 2023 to support research implementation and complete the knowledge transfer workshops on CBPR at the partner institutions in Ghana.
  • Conduct research activities (e.g., literature review, data collection, and data analysis).
  • Mentor and support PhD students and Master’s students, as relevant
  • Participate in the preparation of manuscripts and other knowledge translation outputs.
Position Information
  • Supervision and Academic Unit: Dr. Heather Aldersey
  • Remuneration: $48,000, plus $7,500 for travel expenses in Ghana
  • Start Date and Duration of Appointment: Position is anticipated to run from July 1, 2022 – June 30, 2023.
Required Qualifications:
  • Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada
  • Ph.D. awarded within the past 5 years.
  • Preference for applicants with a research background in community-based rehabilitation, community-based participatory research, or related fields.
  • Excellent qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis expertise.
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Other notes:
  • This is a one-year postdoctoral position.
  • Travel to Ghana will be required.
