Qualifications: The Department of Biological Sciences at San José State University invites applications for a tenure-track position in the area of microbial physiology with expertise in industrial microbiology (e.g. Fermentation, Food Microbiology, Biofuels). Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in a Microbiology-related discipline and a postdoctoral experience is highly recommended. Candidates should demonstrate a publication record reflective of their professional experience and excellent teaching practices. Applicants should have an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training in teaching, and other comparable experiences.

Responsibilities: Teaching duties will include an upper-division laboratory and or lecture course in the area of the applicant’s expertise (e.g., food microbiology, fermentation, microbial biotechnology, bioremediation) and participation in an upper-division General Microbiology course. Other possible teaching assignments include a capstone laboratory course in the microbiology area, Bacterial Physiology, and graduate level microbiology courses in the applicant’s area of expertise. Teaching duties may also include participation in the freshman core biology series. The successful candidate is expected to perform service, develop a research program, publish in peer reviewed journals, obtain extramural research grants, and involve masters and undergraduate students in research. Successful candidates will address the needs of a diverse student population regarding age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language, and academic preparedness through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advising.

Salary Range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Starting Date: August 13, 2020

The Department of Biological Sciences offers degrees in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Organismal and Conservation Biology, Systems Physiology, General Biology, and Marine Biology (with Moss Landing Marine Laboratories). The highest degree offered is the Master's. There are approximately 1000 undergraduate majors and 45 Master's students enrolled. Facilities include, molecular and microbiology research and teaching labs (BSL2 capable), flow cytometry (FACSCalibur & FACScan) facility, cell culture facilities, a Proteomics Facility (QTOF LC/MS/MS, 2D Gel, TYPHOON Imager, and AKTA FPLC systems), anatomy and physiology research and teaching labs, bioinformatics and general computing labs, greenhouses, herbarium, plant growth chambers and museums. There is technical support for laboratory courses and equipment maintenance. Opportunities for collaboration with biotechnology companies are good.
