Postdoctoral Fellowship in Qualitative methods for healthy cities; INTERACT Project

We invite applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Fellowship starting Fall 2021 (or as soon as a qualified applicant is selected) with the INTERACT project, co-led by Yan Kestens (Université de Montréal), Meghan Winters (Simon Fraser University) and Daniel Fuller (Memorial University of Newfoundland). The position is a one-year appointment.

INTERACT is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and aims to evaluate the impact of urban interventions on health and health inequalities.

Primary Responsibilities

Your responsibilities and duties in the position will be:

1. Coding and analysing interview data from different project sites. Analyses will be framed by grant objectives that centre on the broad themes of urban change, place, social and health equity, and lived-experiences related to how people move about and engage with their cities and neighbourhoods.

2. Develop, analyse, write, and submit manuscripts for academic journals. 

3. Assist in project related tasks, including preparing reports and presentations for various stakeholder groups, participation in meetings and team activities, contributions to data cleaning decisions, documentation and analysis, support for ethics applications, development of grant proposals for health research and evaluation funders.

4. Assist faculty supervisor in guiding graduate students’ research.

5. Collaborate with team members to initiate new projects.

You will be expected to submit 2-3 manuscripts for publication within the first year. The fellow will be embedded within local academic research lab.

Priority research areas

  • Candidate will focus on one or more of these priority research areas:
  • Qualitative Analysis: Exploration of place-based experiences related to physical activity, social connectedness, well-being, and urban form interventions
  • Mixed methods: Integration of interview data with other project data (survey data, GPS/accelerometry data, ecological momentary assessment data, spatial data)
  • Theoretical or methodological contributions relevant to the project.

Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in public health, health sciences, geography, social sciences, urban planning, interdisciplinary studies, epidemiology or equivalent. Applicants who do not have a completed Ph.D. at the time of application must include a letter from their Department Chair specifying the date of their dissertation defense.
  • Strong background in qualitative research; includes competency in using qualitative analysis software (such as NVivo or other similar programs)
  • Strong written skills in English, as written production will be key.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team
  • Demonstrated publication record in high quality peer-reviewed journals
  • Ability to take initiative, creativity, attention to details and commitment to producing high quality work.
  • Collaborative, interdisciplinary researcher with an interest to foster supportive student-led research environment

Preferred assets

  • Foundational knowledge in place-based health research / OR related to research on social environments, and urban built form as they relate to health/ OR place-based research that crosscuts health and social issues
  • Solid grounding of equity considerations, including intersectionality, gender, race, and socio-economic status
  • Some knowledge of French (oral and written) preferred.
  • Quantitative analysis skills an asset

Working Conditions

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the successful candidate will work remotely, until on-site options are authorized by the university. The supervisor will ensure proper access the necessary computer infrastructure.

Term

Funding is available for 1 year, with possibility of an extension. The fellow will be expected to apply to Tri-council for postdoctoral fellowships.

Salary

50,000 CAD/yr, to be negotiated depending on experience.
