The Global Strategy Lab is recruiting a Research Associate to support our research program that is focused on designing strategies that address threats to global health and social inequalities. Past and current studies have focused on access to medicines, antimicrobial resistance, science advice, pandemics and domestic and global public health governance and leadership. This position represents a full-time paid opportunity to pursue an interest in global health, develop skills needed for rigorous social sciences research on health law/policy issues, work across national borders as part of a globally integrated research team, interact with decision-makers, and make tangible contributions to ongoing policy processes on pressing health issues. This position also provides opportunities for professional development, including meetings with leading thinkers in global health and attending and presenting at conferences. Candidates must hold a graduate degree by the time of the position start date.

As a research staff member, the selected Research Associate will help oversee the implementation of various research projects relating to public health policy and institutions both domestically and globally. The Research Associate will be working under the direction of GSL’s Director Steven J. Hoffman and with GSL’s Associate Director Patrick Fafard and other GSL faculty members. The Research Associate will be responsible for managing research assistants, preparing  grant applications, writing manuscripts, supporting some office administration and organizing team efforts across multiple studies. This position represents a challenging opportunity that is ideally suited for an academically inclined individual with a demonstrated interest in global health and social science research.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS
  • Graduate degree in a related field (e.g., public health, global health, political science, international relations, public administration, public policy)
  • Strong ability to lead teams and project management experience
  • Strong ability to work independently and in teams
  • Attentiveness to detail
  • Excellent writing skills and demonstrated ability to write for multiple audiences
  • Willingness to take initiative and to learn new things
  • Interest in social science research on global health, governance and institutional design
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (BUT NOT REQUIREMENTS)
  • Experience with social sciences research preferably related to (public) health issues
  • Experience coordinating teams, whether paid staff, volunteers and/or student peers
  • Knowledge of basic health concepts (e.g., a course in health policy) and willingness to learn scientific
  • terminology as it arises
  • Some knowledge of basic statistics and experience with statistical software program
  • Ability to read and/or write in French at a very high level would be considered an asset
RESEARCH ASSOCIATE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Project management and leadership
    • Develop implementation plans for research projects which may use either or both quantitative or qualitative methods
    • Design promotional strategies and related materials to gain engagement and support for research projects with key stakeholders
    • Coordinate and track activities of research staff and resources to ensure projects progress in accordance with predetermined timelines
    • Develop presentations for external stakeholders
    • Keep project participants informed on progress through weekly/monthly updates
  • Research support
    • Provide a full range of research support for GSL’s faculty members
    • Support the design of new studies and the analysis of results
    • Conduct literature searches and environmental scans
    • Help lead the drafting of manuscripts for publication, abstracts and grant applications
    • Prepare submissions and updates to research ethics boards
    • Support integrated and end-of-grant knowledge translation activities
  • Data management
    • Coordinate the collection, delivery, entry, verification, analysis and reporting of data
    • Ensure that relevant research methodology is applied and all research material is handled in accordance with established protocols, policies and procedures
  • Organizational support and coordination
    • Provide some organizational support to the GSL team
    • Coordinate knowledge translation events, including research seminars and international workshops
COMPENSATION AND TERM OF EMPLOYMENT

This Research Associate position is based in Toronto with office space at York University. Annual salary ranges between

$45,000 and $55,000 depending on the successful candidate’s qualifications and years of relevant work experience. This salary range can be increased slightly if the applicant holds a PhD degree. The successful candidate is expected to work approximately 37.5 hours per week. There is one position available.
